Is it better to maintain your saddle with oil or grease?

Good maintenance requires the correct application of the 2 products.

Use the oil 2-3 times a year. At the beginning of the season to re-soften the leather, and at the end of the season before storing your saddle.

You can also oil your saddle when you buy it, especially on the quarters which are often relatively very hard.

On the other hand, prefer grease or cream for current and regular maintenance.

When to use the cream?

The cream nourishes less in depth, softens the leather less.

The cream gives a patina to your leather, and above all it will not darken or mattify leathers, especially light leathers.

How do I properly waterproof my saddle?

By regularly applying grease.

But be careful, it is better to apply several regular applications with little fat, than to brush your saddle with too much fat once. This opens the pores of the leather and therefore produces the opposite effect with fully permeable leather.

What to do with very dry leathers or very hard new leathers?

Feed them with blond or beef foot oil.

Immerse your leather in a Palma oil bath, let it “pump out” the oil for a few hours. Let it dry and then wipe off the excess oil that the leather has pushed out.

If necessary, you can heat the oil for better penetration.

Can we maintain the leathers only with glycerine soap?

No. Glycerine soap is only used to clean leathers. The glycerin will give the leather a little suppleness, but it is not its primary role to nourish a leather.
